CT RideNet officially began operations in Kandiyohi County on July 9, 2007. CT RideNet partner Kandiyohi Area Transit (KAT), has extended public transit into the evening with a contracted dial-a-ride service from 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm Monday through Friday. CT RideNet has referred many riders to the KAT and other local services during normal business hours and now can offer demand service until 10 P.M.
Kandiyohi Area Transit (KAT) and CT RideNet will be offering an evening ADA accessible service in Willmar beginning July 2007. An announcement of the new service was made by Transit Director John Groothuis. The previous taxi service in Willmar ended earlier this year.
KAT has extended public transit into the evening with a contracted dial-a-ride service from 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm Monday through Friday. CT RideNet has referred many riders to the KAT and other local services during normal business hours and now can offer demand service until 10 P.M.
Under the contract, KAT will subsidize the cost of the taxi service during the evening hours only. Passengers or agencies interested in the service must buy a $3 voucher. Vouchers are available at the KAT Office, Cash Wise Foods and Cub Foods. Individuals who do not have a voucher will pay the full price of the ride as determined by CT RideNet, according to Groothuis.
Groothuis said he had been working on a contract with CT RideNet for more than six months. The KAT Joint Powers Board had previously approved the concept of the subsidized taxi service and the budget to pay for the ride subsidy.
Operations Board member Darrell Ruch, who represents West Central Industries of Willmar, said the taxi service will be successful.
"Three dollars is a heck of a ride," said Ruch. "We have people who don’t take jobs because they can’t get a ride."
Groothuis said the new taxi service will fill a need in the community. "I'm happy we are able to try something,'' he said. |
